Never put these 7 foods in the refrigerator, if you do, you’re making a big mistake

Due to the great heat we experience nowadays, even foods spoil more easily. So the first solution that comes to mind is to put them all in the refrigerator. But is that really the right thing to do? This may surprise you, but if you have the habit of storing these 7 foods in the refrigerator, you are doing something wrong. Let’s find out what they are.

Be careful with these 7 foods in the fridge:

  • Bread

Putting food in the refrigerator is a common action we do in good faith, convinced that it will last longer and not spoil. However, for certain specific foods, the refrigerator is not necessary, in fact, we run the risk of spoiling our food earlier than expected. This is the case, for example, with bread. Putting it in the refrigerator may seem like a good idea if we are going to keep it for several days, but the reality is that it changes its flavor and texture. Storing in the refrigerator, in fact, accelerates the aging of bread, which dries out sooner and becomes “softer”.

Additionally, bread has the ability to absorb odors from other foods stored in the refrigerator, so it can also have a different taste. However, if we really can’t avoid storing bread in the fridge, there are some precautions we can take. For example, it’s more sensible to opt for freezing: we slice the bread and put the slices individually in freezer bags. At this point, it’s enough to defrost and heat it in the oven to enjoy it as if it were freshly baked.

  • Onions and Garlic

Also be careful with onions and garlic in the fridge. In particular, it is preferable to store whole onions in a cool and dry place, such as a basement or a pantry. The ideal temperature for their storage is around 7-13°C, and they do not like humidity. Therefore, putting them in the refrigerator is not the best solution. The situation is different for chopped onions. In this case, they are likely to spoil more easily. For this reason, it is advisable to keep them in the refrigerator, possibly in an airtight container, so that they are exposed to air as little as possible. This way you also avoid the smell of cut onion spreading throughout the fridge. And garlic? Its bulbs, like onions, prefer to be stored in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated environment, like a pantry. Pay special attention to direct sunlight: it is not recommended at all for whole garlic bulbs.

If, on the other hand, we have to store already cut garlic cloves, the refrigerator is the best option to preserve their freshness. However, as with onions, it is advisable to store the garlic in an airtight container to protect it and prevent other foods from absorbing the odor. We can keep garlic cloves in the refrigerator for an average of up to 2 weeks. However, you should consider that when in the refrigerator, the flavor of the garlic changes slightly, becoming more delicate.

  • Avocado and potatoes

Can avocado be stored in the refrigerator? Yes, but it depends on the degree of ripeness at which we store it. A green avocado should preferably be kept out of the refrigerator until it is fully ripe. Otherwise, we would delay its ripening, which would mean having to wait a long time before being able to consume it. A ripe avocado can be stored in the refrigerator if we want to wait a few days before consuming it. In this way, its freshness will last longer. To better preserve it in the refrigerator, it would be a good idea to wrap the avocado in a towel or paper bag. By doing this, the excess moisture will be absorbed and we will prevent the avocado from ripening too quickly

The refrigerator is also recommended for an already opened avocado, which can be kept fresh after rubbing the pulp with lemon or olive oil to prevent oxidation. And what about potatoes? These are vegetables that require a different method of preservation compared to other vegetables. In fact, it is better to store whole potatoes in a dark, cool, and well-ventilated environment. When placed in the refrigerator, the starch in the potatoes can transform into sugar more quickly, altering their flavor. If due to the heat there is no cool place to store them, we can opt for the refrigerator, but be careful not to leave the potatoes in the refrigerator for more than a week.

  • Tomatoes and Olive Oil

We come to a food that many often debate: tomatoes. As a general rule, it is not recommended to store tomatoes in the refrigerator unless they have reached a high degree of ripeness and we want to keep them for a few more days. Why is the refrigerator not suitable for tomatoes? Mainly a matter of taste: the low temperature can change the texture and flavor of the tomatoes, making them less tasty and sticky. To keep our tomatoes in perfect condition, the ideal is to store them at room temperature, protecting them from direct sunlight.

However, if the tomatoes are really overripe and we need to preserve them a little longer, we can put them in the refrigerator. Tip: before consuming them, after taking them out of the refrigerator, let the tomatoes warm up to room temperature. This way, the flavor will be better. And what about olive oil? The refrigerator, in this case, is absolutely not recommended: olive oil should be kept cool and in a dark place. The cold of the refrigerator can, in fact, make the oil thicker and cloudy, or cause condensation to form inside the bottle, which would compromise the quality of our oil due to the moisture. As a general rule, olive oil should be stored at a temperature of 20-25°C, in an airtight container and away from direct sunlight.
